As the environmental industry evolved in the 80’s the term slurry wall was used interchangeable for structural and non-structural walls constructed using a slurry excavation technique. The geotechnical world has consistently referred to the structural walls constructed with the slurry excavation technique as “Slurry Walls” and non-structural walls constructed with the slurry excavation technique as “Slurry Trenches”.
Slurry trenches are also commonly referred to as cut-off walls, but diaphragm walls are also referred to as cut-off walls too. It appears that the confusion is too wide spread to correct at this point, so the recommendation it to use additional descriptors when discussing any structural or non-structural walls constructed using the slurry excavation technique.
